Introduction
The Sri Lankan Medical Students’ Union (SLMSU) of Vitebsk State Medical University (VSMU) is the official body representing Sri Lankan medical students studying in Vitebsk State Medical University . Our union was established with a strong purpose: to support, advocate for, and empower Sri Lankan students, ensuring they receive the necessary academic, social, and cultural support throughout their medical journey.
Medical education abroad can be both exciting and challenging. While students gain invaluable international exposure and high-quality medical training, they also face unique difficulties, including adapting to a new environment, managing academic workloads, and preserving their cultural identity. SLMSU is dedicated to making this journey smoother by offering mentorship, academic support, networking opportunities, and cultural representation.
Through various initiatives, events, and advocacy efforts, we aim to strengthen our community, address student concerns, and build lasting connections among Sri Lankan students in Vitebsk. Our goal is to ensure that every Sri Lankan medical student at VSMU thrives both academically and personally while maintaining strong ties to their cultural roots.
Our Vision
The vision of the Sri Lankan Medical Students’ Union is to create a united, supportive, and empowered community of Sri Lankan medical students at VSMU. We strive to:
• Provide a strong support system that enhances the academic, social, and cultural well-being of Sri Lankan students.
• Promote academic excellence by offering guidance, study resources, and mentorship from senior students and medical professionals.
• Foster unity and collaboration among Sri Lankan students, ensuring a positive and inclusive environment.
• Preserve and celebrate Sri Lankan culture through cultural festivals, traditional events, and social gatherings.
• Develop leadership and professionalism among students by organizing professional development programs, workshops, and networking opportunities.
• Advocate for student rights by working closely with university administration to address student concerns and ensure their voices are heard.
• Encourage community engagement by participating in charitable initiatives, medical outreach programs, and volunteering efforts.

Our Goals
1. Academic Support & Excellence
• Establish mentorship programs where senior students guide newcomers in adapting to university life and excelling in their studies.
• Organize study groups, peer tutoring sessions, and academic workshops to enhance learning experiences.
• Provide resources, notes, and study materials to help students prepare for exams efficiently.
• Invite guest lecturers, professors, and medical professionals to conduct informative sessions on various medical subjects.
• Assist students in career guidance and preparation for licensing exams such as ERPM (Sri Lanka), PLAB (UK), USMLE (USA), and AMC (Australia).
2. Student Welfare & Advocacy
• Address student concerns related to academics, accommodation, visa issues, and university policies.
• Work closely with the university administration to ensure the rights and needs of Sri Lankan students are met.
• Assist newly arrived students with settling in, providing guidance on housing, documentation, and university procedures.
• Offer mental health and well-being support, connecting students with professionals when needed.
• Organize financial aid and scholarship awareness programs to help students manage their education effectively.
3. Cultural Preservation & Social Events
• Celebrate Sri Lankan festivals such as Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Vesak, and Deepavali to promote cultural identity.
• Organize Sri Lankan-themed events, talent shows, and traditional food festivals to keep students connected to their roots.
• Conduct sports and recreational activities, including cricket tournaments, to promote teamwork and social bonding.
• Encourage participation in multicultural events at VSMU, showcasing Sri Lankan heritage to the international student community.
4. Professional Development & Leadership
• Host workshops and seminars on medical advancements, leadership, and communication skills.
• Provide internship opportunities and guidance on post-graduation career paths.
• Connect students with Sri Lankan medical associations and alumni networks to expand career prospects.
• Develop leadership programs that encourage students to take on active roles in organizing events and representing student interests.
5. Community Engagement & Charity Work
• Organize medical camps and health awareness programs to serve underprivileged communities in Belarus and Sri Lanka.
• Conduct fundraising events for charitable causes, including donations for medical aid, disaster relief, and education.
• Collaborate with local and international NGOs to promote social responsibility and medical outreach.
• Encourage students to engage in volunteering activities, contributing to both the local Belarusian community and Sri Lankan humanitarian efforts.
